Fair Bottom Hill

The walk up Fair Bottom Hill from Settle takes you through proper Yorkshire limestone country, and the views back down the valley justify the leg work. It's not a technical climb - more of a steady moorland trudge - but the rewards are genuine. From the top you're looking out across Ribblesdale with the Pennines rolling away in all directions, which is cracking on a clear day.

This is walker territory, no question. The summit isn't dramatic or famous enough to draw coach parties, so you'll mostly have it to yourself. Families with older kids will manage it fine; younger ones might find it a bit of a slog without much to do when they get there except look at the view. History types won't find much at the actual peak, but the landscape itself tells the story of the Dales - limestone hills, dry stone walls, the whole thing.

Allow a couple of hours return depending on your pace. There's no visitor centre or facilities at the top, so bring water and snacks. Weather can close in quickly up here, so don't go on a drizzly afternoon expecting to see anything.
