Eves Corner Pond

A small pond on the outskirts of Chelmsford that punches above its weight for a quiet afternoon out. Eves Corner Pond is the sort of place locals know about but most visitors drive straight past - which is rather its charm. The water's ringed with trees, there's a decent footpath around it, and on a calm day the reflections are genuinely lovely. You'll spot ducks, the occasional heron if you're lucky, and enough wildlife to keep keen birdwatchers busy for an hour or so.

It's best suited to families after a gentle walk rather than those after dramatic scenery or adrenaline. Young kids enjoy the ducks, older ones won't be bored if you're patient enough to spot water birds. The walk takes about 45 minutes at a comfortable pace, depending on how you loop it. No facilities to speak of, so come prepared - bring water and a packed lunch if you want to linger.

Free to visit, naturally. Spring and early autumn are when it's really worth your time; summer gets muggy and the water loses appeal. If you're camping at The Courts Campsite or Hoe Mill Lock nearby, this makes a sensible half-morning sortie before heading somewhere with more going on. It's not a destination in itself, but rather a nice breathing space during a busier Essex holiday.
