Esgair-neiriau

The walk up Esgair-neiriau from Dolgellau will take the better part of a morning, but the effort pays off once you're standing at the summit taking in views across the Cader Idris range. It's not the highest peak in the area - that honour goes to Cader Idris itself - but what makes this mountain worthwhile is the relative peace you'll find up there compared to its more famous neighbour.

This is proper walking territory. You'll need decent boots, a map, and an honest assessment of your fitness level. The path climbs steadily through moorland, and whilst it's not technical scrambling, it's no casual stroll either. Allow three to four hours for the round trip depending on your pace and how long you linger at the top. On a clear day - and they do happen in North Wales - you can see all the way towards Snowdon to the north.

History enthusiasts will appreciate the slate mining heritage visible on the slopes heading up. This was serious industrial terrain once, not just pretty mountain scenery.

Families with older teenagers might manage it, though younger children will likely find the climb tedious. Solo walkers and small groups get the most out of the experience.

Based near Dolgellau, you're well placed to explore the wider area. Llwyn yr Helm Caravan and Camping Park sits just 5.8 miles away and scores highly with visitors - it's a solid base for a few days tackling various peaks in the region. The weather will dictate when you go; summer months offer the longest daylight, but autumn can surprise with clearer skies.
