Esgair Dafydd

The walk up Esgair Dafydd rewards you with views across mid-Wales that stretch for miles on a clear day. It's a proper hill rather than a mountain - around 600 metres - but don't let that fool you into thinking it's a doddle. The paths are steep in places and bog is always a possibility depending on recent weather.

Llanwrtyd Wells sits at the base, a quirky market town that's become something of a haven for outdoor types. From there, the ascent takes most people between 1.5 to 2 hours, and you'll need proper boots. The real appeal is how wild it feels - not many crowds, genuine countryside, and on a good day the Cambrian Mountains roll out in every direction.

It's ideal for walkers who want effort without major technicality, and the kind of place where you'll actually feel like you've gone somewhere. Families with older kids will manage fine, though younger ones might struggle with the steepness. It's free to walk, naturally, and accessible year-round though winter can be properly muddy.

If you're staying at Welsh Glamping or Riverside Caravan Park nearby, this makes an excellent morning or afternoon outing. Both parks are within striking distance, which means you can tackle the hill and be back for a decent lunch. The views justify the climb, even if the weather only gives you half an hour of decent visibility.
