Erwsuran

Standing at 543 metres above the Mawddach estuary, this unassuming peak delivers one of the most rewarding views in southern Snowdonia without the crowds that plague its famous neighbours. The walk up from the car park near Llanfihangel-y-pennant takes about an hour through mixed woodland before opening onto moorland with increasingly dramatic vistas.

What makes Erwsuran special is the perspective it offers over Cadair Idris and the Dolgellau valley - you're positioned perfectly to appreciate the dramatic northern face of Wales' second-highest mountain range. On clear days, the view stretches west to the coast and Barmouth Bay.

Families with older children will manage the ascent comfortably, though it's not suitable for pushchairs. The path can get boggy after rain, so proper walking boots are essential. Allow three hours for the round trip including time to properly appreciate the summit views.

From holiday parks around Porthmadog like Haven Greenacres or Black Rock Sands, it's about a 20-minute drive to reach the starting point.
