Elbolton

The walk up Elbolton is short, sharp, and oddly satisfying - you're looking at maybe 30 minutes from the car park near Skipton to the summit, with views across Wharfedale that justify every breath on the way up. It's a limestone peak, 388 metres, nothing fearsome by Pennine standards, but the ascent is proper steep in places. What makes it worthwhile is that cave at the top - a natural limestone hole that's been a shelter, a mine, probably a few other things besides. Kids don't usually get bored scrambling about up here, and the ridge walk itself has that feeling of proper exposure without any actual danger.

This is walker territory. Serious hikers will find it a quick warm-up before tackling bigger days in the Dales, while families after an afternoon's outing without the commitment of something like Pen-y-ghent will find it about right. The surrounding landscape - dry stone walls, moorland edge, the valley floor dropping away behind you - is classic Yorkshire, the sort of view that gets into your bones.

Free to visit, obviously. Park up near the village and get on with it. If you're staying at one of the nearby camps - Coxons Farm Glamping Pods or Wharfedale Caravan Club are both within a couple of miles - you could knock this out before breakfast and still have the afternoon for Bolton Abbey Estate or a wander around Skipton proper. Worth doing on a clear day. Damp weather makes it slippery and less rewarding.
