Eglwys Caersalem

The tiny stone chapel at Eglwys Caersalem, just outside Caernarfon, is one of those wonderfully obscure Welsh churches that rewards a small detour. It's genuinely small - you could walk past it without noticing if the lane wasn't signposted - but that's rather the point. The building itself dates back centuries, with that characterful roughcast and slate roof you find all over Gwynedd, and the interior is exactly what you'd expect: simple wooden pews, whitewashed walls, and the kind of quiet that makes you drop your voice without thinking about it.

This is strictly for church enthusiasts or walkers after a minor pause rather than a major attraction. You'll spend ten minutes inside, twenty if you're the type who reads every inscription on the walls. The real appeal is the location itself - it sits in proper countryside between Caernarfon and the Strait, and the walk to reach it feels appropriately remote for North Wales. There's something rather lovely about finding a place with so little fanfare, where locals outnumber tourists by about a thousand to one.

If you're staying at any of the nearby parks - Coed Helen is barely half a mile away, or Glan Gwna not much further - it's the sort of thing to tack on to an afternoon walk rather than plan a trip around. Access appears to be free, though opening hours aren't advertised anywhere, so aim for daylight and don't be surprised if the door's locked. Worth the five-minute drive from Caernarfon if you're in the mood for authentic Welsh church-spotting.
