Edward the Peacemaker 1841-1910

The inscription marks him as Edward the Peacemaker - a title that raises eyebrows given his appetite for elaborate state visits and international intrigue. Still, there's something rather touching about how Victorians and Edwardians felt compelled to memorialize their rulers in stone.

This isn't a sprawling heritage site with interactive displays or costumed interpreters. It's a straightforward monument that'll take you five minutes to look at properly, ten if you're the type who reads every word carved into granite. The spot itself is pleasant enough - you get a proper sense of how the townsfolk of Tiverton wanted to honour their era.

Historians interested in Edwardian attitudes will find it worthwhile; casual holiday-makers less so, unless they're collecting photos of Devon's oddball monuments. It works best as a quick diversion if you're already in Tiverton for other reasons - the town itself has decent high street shops and the Grand Western Canal nearby for a decent walk.

If you're staying at Nirvana Glamping just down the road, you could easily pop over between other activities. Combine it with exploring Tiverton's medieval streets and you've got a half-day sorted. Don't go out of your way specifically for this, but don't ignore it if you're passing through.
