Eden Hill

The walk up Eden Hill, just outside Newent, isn't long but it's steep enough to earn you a proper view across the Forest of Dean and into Wales on a clear day. The summit itself is modest - you're looking at grassland and scrub, not some dramatic rocky outcrop - but the panorama makes the climb worthwhile.

It's the sort of place that works best for walkers rather than families wanting an afternoon's entertainment. You'll want good boots and about an hour to get up and back down comfortably, though the actual ascent only takes twenty minutes if you're fit. The paths can be muddy in winter, which is worth knowing. There's no café at the top, no facilities, just you and the view.

What makes it valuable is how it slots into a Forest of Dean holiday. If you're camping at Pelerine (just 1.6 miles away) or staying at one of the larger parks like Haywood Farm, this gives you a quick hit of elevation and panorama without eating up your whole day. It pairs nicely with wandering through Newent itself or exploring the forest's better-known trails. Go early to dodge other walkers and catch the light coming from the west. The autumn and winter months are actually better than summer - fewer midges, clearer skies, and fewer groups clogging the narrow paths.
