Ever Hill

Standing at 249 metres, this modest Gloucestershire summit won't trouble serious peak baggers but delivers surprisingly good views across the Severn Vale for relatively little effort. The walk up from Newent takes about 45 minutes through pleasant woodland and open fields, with a reasonably clear path most of the way - though it can get muddy after rain.

Families with older children will find it manageable, but the climb is probably too much for toddlers unless they're proper little mountain goats. The real reward comes at the top where you get a proper panoramic sweep taking in the Malvern Hills on a clear day. It's free, obviously, and accessible year-round though I'd avoid it in thick fog when you'll see absolutely nothing.

Walkers staying at nearby sites like Haywood Farm Caravan and Camping Park or Darnells' Farm Luxury Glamping will appreciate having a decent hill walk on their doorstep. The summit itself is fairly unremarkable - no dramatic rocky outcrop or ancient monument - but the views justify the leg work. Allow two hours round trip including time to catch your breath and take in the scenery. Best tackled in the morning when the light favours the western views.
