Hospital Wood

Hospital Wood sits just outside Newent in Gloucestershire, a proper working forest that feels a world away from the usual manicured woodland walks. This isn't a visitor attraction with a car park and a gift shop - it's the real thing, managed for timber and wildlife, which is precisely why it's worth the detour.

The woodland itself is mixed and mature, with plenty of good walking routes threading through. You'll find yourself among oak, beech, and conifers, and in spring the bluebells are genuinely excellent. The forest floor stays reasonably dry underfoot for most of the year, though winter can be muddy after rain. Allow a couple of hours for a decent loop, or pop in for a quick 45-minute wander if you're passing through.

It works well for families who want their kids burning off energy in an actual wood rather than a trimmed park. Walkers will appreciate the lack of crowds and the authentic forest atmosphere. Don't come expecting facilities - there's little signposting or infrastructure. Check access before you go, as forestry operations can occasionally close sections.

If you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Cwtch Cabins, Yew Tree Farm, or Up Sticks Glamping are all within four miles - Hospital Wood makes an excellent morning or afternoon break from site. It's not dramatic or showy, but it's honest and green, which counts for a lot in Gloucestershire.
