Webb's Coppice

A proper woodland walk without the crowds you'd find at the big Forest of Dean sites just down the road. Webb's Coppice is a small, quiet forest near Newent where you can actually hear yourself think - no gift shops, no car parks with forty coaches, just trees and paths and the occasional dog walker.

It's the sort of place where families with younger kids won't feel pressured to stay for hours. An hour or ninety minutes covers it comfortably, which makes it ideal as a half-day activity when you're based at one of the nearby parks like Up Sticks Glamping or Cwtch Cabins. The woodland floor is soft underfoot and reasonably well-trodden, so it's accessible without being boring.

Historically, coppiced woodland like this was actively managed - trees cut back to ground level so they'd regrow as multiple stems. It's less of a feature here now, but the forestry is pleasant enough, with a mix of broadleaves that work well in autumn. Spring's decent too, though you won't be blown away by carpets of bluebells.

Walkers will appreciate the simplicity of it. There's no interpretive signage or paved routes to contend with, which some will find freeing and others might find a touch underdeveloped. It's genuinely free access - no parking fees, no admission charge - which counts for something when you're trying not to spend a fortune on a holiday.

Nearest town is Newent, about three miles off. Worth combining with a stroll round the market square and maybe a pint, rather than treating it as a destination in itself.
