Echo Pot

Echo Pot is a small cave system just outside Settle in the Yorkshire Dales, and it's the sort of place that rewards a bit of curiosity if you're already hiking in the area. The cave itself is modest - nothing like the cathedral chambers you'll find at Ingleborough or Stump Cross - but that's rather the point. You duck through a low entrance and find yourself in a tight passage that opens into a chamber where your voice genuinely echoes back at you, which explains the name. Most people spend twenty minutes poking about, testing the acoustics, and moving on. It's free, which helps, and there's no gate or keeper to find.

The walk to get there is the real draw. It sits on the side of a dale with proper views across the Settle area, and if you're staying at Ribblesdale Pods or The Dalesbridge Campsite nearby, you can easily build it into a morning ramble. This isn't a destination in itself - it's a handy diversion if you're already out walking. Families with young kids who like caves will get a kick out of it; older walkers might find it a touch underwhelming unless they're keen on caving or collecting Dales spots. The entrance is a scramble rather than a proper climb, so it's accessible but needs a bit of care.

Go on a day when the weather's decent enough to justify the walk. There's no visitor infrastructure - no cafe, no toilet, nothing - so treat it as a bonus rather than a main event. Winter visits can be damp and dark, so bring a torch if you're serious about exploring the deeper sections.
