The earthworks near Whitby are the real deal - genuine Iron Age or medieval defensive structures that jut out of the moorland like nature's own architecture lesson. You're looking at raised banks and ditches, sometimes arranged in concentric rings, built centuries ago to protect settlements or mark territory. The actual viewing experience depends entirely on the weather and your tolerance for windswept Yorkshire moorland, but on a clear day the views inland are genuinely worth the walk.

You can trace the defensive logic with your own eyes - why the builders chose this particular vantage point, how the ditches would have slowed an attacker. It's one thing reading about Iron Age settlement patterns in a book; quite another standing on the ridge feeling the wind that ancient people felt.

The practical side: these aren't visitor attractions with facilities or signage, so you need reasonable navigational skills and waterproof boots. There's no admission charge because they're essentially open moorland, but allow a couple of hours including the walk from the nearest parking. Spring and early summer are cracking for visibility.
