About Duntrune Castle
You can walk right up to it from the nearby village of Lochgilphead (about four miles south). The castle itself is privately owned and not open to the public for tours, but that doesn't stop people parking up and getting photos from the outside. The views across the loch are genuinely worth the trip - the water opens out properly here, and on a clear day you can see the hills rolling away. It's a 20-minute potter about, longer if you're the type to sit and soak it in.
Historically minded visitors will get a kick out of it. The castle has proper stories - clan feuds, sieges, the works - though you'll need to do your homework beforehand. Families with young kids might find it a bit of a letdown since there's no climbing about inside, but it makes for a solid photo stop between other Argyll attractions.
Stay at The Pod Over By or Lochgilphead Caravan Park and you're well-positioned to explore the wider area. Duntrune works best as part of a longer coastal loop rather than a destination in itself.
