Dunollie Wood

The woodland paths at Dunollie Wood unfold just north of Oban, offering a proper escape into something genuinely quiet. It's a straightforward nature reserve - nothing fancy, just trees, moss-covered rocks, and the sort of undergrowth that feels properly wild even though you're minutes from town.

What you're doing here is walking. The paths wind through mixed woodland with decent views toward the water if you pick the right route. It's the kind of place where you notice things - lichen on fallen logs, ferns pushing through the forest floor, the occasional bird that bothers to make itself heard. Allow a couple of hours if you want to do it properly rather than just potter about for 30 minutes.

This works best for walkers and anyone after a genuine bit of nature rather than a manicured experience. Parents with young children will find it manageable enough, though it's not a destination in itself - more of a morning activity before heading into Oban for lunch. If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Tanunda Pods, Maggie's Cabin, or Oban Holiday Park are all close by - it's worth combining with a beach visit or a walk round Oban itself.

Go when it's not immediately after rain unless you like the mud-sliding approach. The reserve is free and open access, which is refreshing. You won't need booking or planning beyond checking weather and wearing proper boots.
