Dunmoor Hill

The walk up Dunmoor Hill from Wooler rewards you with views that stretch across the Cheviot Hills and down into the Breamish Valley - proper Northumberland rolling country. Once you're up there, the landscape opens right out. On a clear day you can trace the valley floor where the River Breamish winds through, and the higher peaks of the Cheviots rise beyond. The hill itself is moorland, windswept and honest - no faffing about with visitor centres or teashops, just heather and sky and the occasional wandering sheep.

This suits walkers more than anyone else, though it's the sort of place families with decent hiking legs will enjoy too. You're looking at roughly two hours up and back, depending on your pace and how many times you stop to catch your breath. Pick a day when the weather's cooperating; mist rolls in quick up here and suddenly the views vanish completely.

It's free, naturally, and you can start the walk from near Wooler itself. The only real consideration is timing - go early in the day if you want the light working properly, and check conditions beforehand. Northumberland weather doesn't announce itself.
