Dunchraigaig Cairn

A Bronze Age cairn sitting on a hillside near Lochgilphead, Dunchraigaig is the sort of place that rewards a modest detour but won't consume your afternoon. What you're looking at is a chambered cairn - basically a Neolithic burial mound built around 3,500 BC - and it's genuinely impressive in person, even if the historical signage could be clearer.

The walk up isn't arduous, though the path can get boggy depending on when you visit. Once you're there, you get decent views across Argyll and time to sit and think about the Bronze Age folk who built this. There's something properly moving about standing at a 5,000-year-old grave monument, even when the context boards leave you guessing at half the details.

History enthusiasts will get the most from this one - you need to care about chambered cairns and prehistoric burial practices. Kids might manage twenty minutes before asking when they can get an ice cream. It's free, which is brilliant, and there's no ticket office or facilities, so come prepared.

If you're based at The Pod Over By or Lochgilphead Caravan Park, Dunchraigaig works as a morning stop before heading to bigger attractions in the region. Don't expect queues or crowds - that's rather the point. Go when the light's decent and you've got an hour to spare. It's worth it, but only if ancient monuments actually interest you.
