Dun Chuain, dun site

A grassy mound in the Argyll countryside that most people drive straight past without noticing. Dun Chuain is an Iron Age fortified settlement - basically a ring fort from around 2,000 years ago - and what you're looking at is the earth rampart that once ringed the whole thing. It's modest, honestly. There's no interpretive board, no café, no car park with a wee shop selling fridge magnets.

What makes it worth a stop is context. If you're already exploring Argyll's archaeological sites or have an interest in how ancient Scots actually lived, this gives you genuine pause for thought. The fortification's still clearly visible as an oval raised bank, and standing there you can picture the defensive ditch and timber palisade that would've made this a proper stronghold. Takes fifteen minutes to walk round, twenty if you're actually contemplating it.

Families with very young kids will find it dull. Walkers passing through the area from Lochgilphead might swing by on a longer ramble. Serious Iron Age enthusiasts will find it worthwhile alongside other local archaeology.

It's free and accessible year-round, though there's no formal site management. The Pod Over By is remarkably close at just 1.5 miles - perfect if you're after a camping base for exploring Argyll's less obvious sites. Lochgilphead Caravan Park sits a shade further but still within spitting distance. Don't expect facilities or signage at the dun itself, but the actual location is straightforward to find once you know it's there.
