Duddo Hill

The walk up Duddo Hill takes the best part of an hour if you're moving at a decent pace, and the views across the Scottish Borders from the top are genuinely worth the effort. It's not a dramatic peak - nothing like the dramatic stuff further west - but on a clear day you can see right across to the Cheviot Hills, and that sense of space is proper refreshing.

The path itself is straightforward enough, starting from near Berwick-upon-Tweed. You're looking at moorland walking mostly, so proper boots matter if it's been wet. The ground can be boggy in patches. Most people allow two to three hours for the round trip depending on fitness and how long you spend at the top taking in the scenery.

This works brilliantly as part of a week based around Chainbridge Touring Caravan Site or Coldstream Holiday Park, both within striking distance. Combine it with walks in the foothills or a trip down to the border towns and you've got a decent day sorted. It's the kind of walk that appeals to people who like genuine countryside without needing a scramble or technical bits - families with teenagers will manage it fine, though younger kids might find it a bit of a slog.

Timing-wise, spring and early autumn are best. Summer can feel a touch muggy up there if the weather turns, and winter brings its own challenges with visibility and underfoot conditions. Free to walk, no facilities at the top, so bring water.
