Duddo Five Stones - Stone Circle

Five standing stones in the middle of a Northumberland field, that's what Duddo offers - no visitor centre, no gift shop, no crowds. You'll find them near Berwick-upon-Tweed, arranged in a rough circle on high ground with proper wide views across the border country. The stones themselves aren't massive, which somehow makes them feel more genuine than some of the showier ancient monuments. They're Bronze Age, probably around 3,500 years old, which is sobering when you're stood right beside them.

Walkers will love this one. The site's completely free and open year-round - just turn up. Most people spend twenty minutes here, which is enough to walk around the stones, take the photos, and sit quiet for a bit if you're that way inclined. The walk from the nearest road is short and flat, so it's not demanding. Families with young kids will find it a bit underwhelming on its own, though it's perfectly fine as a stop-off during a bigger Northumberland ramble.

If you're camping at Chainbridge or Ord House, this is an easy afternoon detour. Neither park is far, and it breaks up the caravan routine nicely. The landscape around here - rolling fields, stone walls, few trees - is classic borderland stuff. Go in late afternoon when the light's better and you won't run into other people. It's the kind of place that feels properly old without needing to shout about it.
