Duddo Five Stones

Five standing stones arranged in a rough circle on a windswept Northumberland hillside - that's Duddo, and it's genuinely worth the detour if you're anywhere near Berwick-upon-Tweed. You won't find crowds here. The stones themselves aren't towering monoliths; they're modest, weathered things, but that's rather the point. This is archaeology without the visitor centre, without the cafe, without the ropes and interpretation boards. Just you, the stones, and four centuries of weather.

The site sits about four miles from Berwick, accessible via a reasonable walk across open farmland. Allow twenty minutes to get there from the nearest road, longer if you're taking photos. It's genuinely Bronze Age - roughly 3,500 years old - which hits differently when you're standing among the actual stones rather than reading about them in a museum. Families with older kids will get something from it; younger children might lose interest once they've circled the stones once. The real appeal is for archaeology enthusiasts and walkers who appreciate the raw, undeveloped feel of the place.

It's free, obviously - nothing to pay, nothing to book. Go when the weather's decent because the exposed hilltop catches every bit of wind coming off the North Sea. If you're staying at Chainbridge Touring Caravan Site or Ord House Country Park for a Northumberland break, Duddo makes a solid morning's outing when combined with a walk across the surrounding moorland. Don't expect drama, but do expect genuine Bronze Age authenticity.
