About Druid Stone Circle

A circle of standing stones in the moorland above Bury, about the size of a modest village green but feeling far older and stranger than anywhere near Manchester should. There are seven stones, weathered to the colour of ash, arranged in what archaeologists reckon dates back four thousand years or so. The Druid Stone Circle sits high enough that you get proper views across Lancashire - on a clear day you can see the hills rolling away, which presumably is why someone decided to plant a circle here in the first place.

Walkers are the real audience for this one. It's not a manicured archaeological site with interpretation boards and a café - you'll need proper shoes and the ability to navigate moorland. That said, once you're there the place has genuine atmosphere. There's something about standing inside a Bronze Age circle that no museum case can replicate, especially when you've had to work for it a bit.

The practicalities: it's free, always accessible, and you should allow a couple of hours if you're coming from Bury - factor in the walk and time to just sit with it. Families with older kids who actually like walking will get something from it; younger children might struggle with the terrain and the lack of "things to do."

If you're staying at Burrs Country Park or Dearden Wood nearby, it's a solid half-day excursion that breaks up the usual caravan routine. Not essential, but genuinely worth the effort if you like your history with a bit of weather in it.
