Doxford Place Methodist Church

A red-brick Methodist chapel that's been standing on the edge of Whitley Bay since 1906, Doxford Place is one of those local institutions that quietly anchors a neighbourhood. It's modest in scale - you won't spend hours here - but it's worth a look if you're into Victorian-era nonconformist architecture or you've got an interest in how communities built themselves from the ground up.

The building itself is fairly typical of early-twentieth-century Methodist chapels: solid Victorian brickwork, tall sash windows, that particular stripped-back aesthetic that Methodists favoured. Nothing showy, everything functional. Inside you'll find the kind of peaceful, spare interior you'd expect - no fussy ornamentation, just clean lines and light. It's the sort of place that tells you something about the people who built it and what they valued.
