Dove Crag

Scrambling up the rocky face requires proper boots and a good head for heights - this isn't your typical Lake District amble. Dove Crag towers above Dovedale at 792 metres, offering one of the more challenging but rewarding climbs in the eastern fells. The route from Ambleside typically takes you through the valley before the steep ascent begins in earnest.

Experienced walkers will love the technical aspects and the spectacular ridge views once you reach the top. Hart Crag and Fairfield lie within striking distance if you fancy extending the day into a proper fell circuit. The panoramic views across Windermere and the central fells are genuinely stunning on a clear day.

Families with young children should probably give this one a miss - the scrambling sections can be intimidating and the weather changes quickly up here. Allow at least 4-5 hours for the round trip from Ambleside, and check conditions before setting off as the higher sections can be treacherous in poor weather.
