Jenkyn's Crag

Scrambling up through the woodland above Ambleside, you'll find this rocky outcrop offers one of the finest elevated views over Lake Windermere without the crowds that plague Orrest Head. The walk takes about 45 minutes from the town centre, following well-marked paths through mixed woodland before the final steep push to the crag itself.

Families with older children will manage the climb easily enough, though toddlers might struggle with the rockier sections near the top. The reward is a proper panoramic sweep across England's largest natural lake, with the Langdale Pikes forming a dramatic backdrop to the west.

What sets Jenkyn's Crag apart is the peace you'll find here. While tour groups thunder up to Orrest Head, this spot remains refreshingly quiet even on busy summer days. The rocky platform gives you plenty of space to spread out for a picnic, and the views are frankly better than many of the more famous Lake District viewpoints.

Allow two hours return from Ambleside, including time to soak up the vista. Early morning visits catch the best light, when mist often clings to the water below.
