Dolddinas Camp V

The ramparts are still there, half-buried in bracken and heather, if you know where to look. Dolddinas Camp V sits high above Dolgellau in the Gwynedd hills, an Iron Age fort that's been quietly crumbling for roughly 2,000 years. What you actually get is a series of defensive earthworks - ditches and banks that once ringed a hilltop settlement. It's not dramatic stuff. There are no standing stones, no visitor centre, no interpretive boards telling you what life was like back then.

Walkers will find it worthwhile, especially if you're already tackling the surrounding moorland. The approach is steep and genuinely rewarding - you'll work for the views across the Cader Idris massif. History enthusiasts should manage their expectations. This isn't Caernarfon Castle. What makes it special is the effort required to reach it and the sudden realisation, when you're standing in the middle of those earthworks, that people chose to live here deliberately. They built defences. They expected trouble.

Allow a couple of hours if you're making a proper day of it with the walk. There's no entrance fee or formal opening hours - it's just there on the hillside. Best visited in late summer when the bracken dies back enough to actually see the ground. If you're staying at Llechwedd Glamping near Plas Weunydd, it's well within reach as a half-day excursion. Dolgellau itself makes a solid base for exploring this corner of North Wales.
