Doctor's Hill

The walk up Doctor's Hill near Stockbridge rewards you with one of those unexpected Wiltshire views that makes you wonder why you haven't been before. It's not a dramatic peak - nothing like the Pennines - but on a clear day the sight across the Test Valley spreads out properly below you, all rolling chalk downland and patchwork fields.

You're looking at a proper walker's destination rather than a casual stroll. The hill itself takes a decent effort to climb, especially if you're tackling it from the Stockbridge side, but the paths are well-maintained and the gradient, while bit steep in places, won't defeat anyone with reasonable fitness. Allow a good hour for the ascent and views; double that if you're bringing kids who like exploring.

Historically, it's worth knowing the area sits within classic downland territory - the sort of landscape that's been grazed and farmed for centuries. There's nothing dramatic to see up there in terms of ruins or monuments, but the sense of walking ancient pathways counts for something.
