Dùn Uabairtich

The walk up Dùn Uabairtich isn't long, but it's proper steep. Starting from near Oban, this Argyll peak rewards you with views across the Firth of Lorn that make the huffing and puffing worthwhile. On a clear day - and you'll want clear weather for this one - you're looking out towards the islands, the water, and enough of the surrounding landscape to remind you why people move to this part of Scotland.

It's a hill walkers' sort of thing rather than a tourist trap. You won't find crowds or facilities up there, just a decent scramble and the satisfaction of reaching the top. Maybe ninety minutes round trip if you're not dawdling, though that depends entirely on your fitness. The path itself is reasonably well-trodden but can be boggy after rain, so decent boots are non-negotiable.

Families with older kids will manage fine; little ones might find the steepness tedious. History buffs will appreciate the Gaelic name and the way these peaks shaped the region, though there's nothing dramatic to actually see once you've summited beyond the vista itself.

Oban's close enough that you could do this as a morning outing and still have the afternoon free. Stay at Oban Holiday Park just half a mile away if you're basing yourself here - it's well-reviewed and puts you within walking distance of the town itself. Or push out to Tanunda Pods or Maggie's Cabin for something quieter. The real value here is in the walk itself, not what's at the top. Go if you like moving your legs and want uncluttered views; skip it if you need facilities or an easy stroll.
