Dionysius Wood

The woodland around Dionysius sits just outside Clitheroe, offering proper walking country without the faffing about you get at some of the bigger Lancashire attractions. It's a straightforward forest - nothing fancy, just trees, paths, and that particular smell of damp earth that reminds you why you came north in the first place.

You can wander through for a couple of hours easily enough, and the paths are decent underfoot even after rain. It's the kind of place where kids will actually want to explore rather than groan about being taken somewhere. Adults who like their walks brisk and uninterrupted will appreciate it too - far quieter than the honeypots closer to Preston.

The main thing is knowing what you're after. This isn't a visitor attraction with facilities and a gift shop. It's a walk. Access appears to be free, though always worth checking locally in Clitheroe before you head out. Go early on weekends if you want solitude - late afternoon light filters through the canopy nicely, but you won't have the place to yourself.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Pendle View is closest at 2.5 miles - this makes a solid half-day break from the caravan. Couples after a proper stretch of the legs should absolutely go. The real draw is simplicity: no entrance fee palaver, no car parks full of tour groups, just woodland doing what woodland does best.
