Devizes Town

Devizes is one of those market towns that actually rewards a proper wander rather than a quick drive-through. The town centre sits around a market square that feels genuinely lived-in, with independent shops, decent pubs, and a castle that dominates the skyline - though you can only view it from outside, which is a bit of a letdown if you're expecting to get inside.

The real draw here is the Kennet and Avon Canal, which runs right through town. If you're staying at one of the nearby glamping spots or caravan sites - Mill Farm is particularly excellent - the canal towpath gives you miles of flat, easy walking without needing to battle through crowds. It's where locals actually spend their time, not tourists. The waterside pubs are proper neighbourhood joints, and on a clear day the walk towards Caen Hill locks is genuinely pleasant.

You'll get the most out of Devizes if you're into canal heritage or want a quieter base for exploring the Wiltshire countryside rather than visiting somewhere specifically "to do" the town. Two hours is enough for the square and a canal-side pub lunch. History buffs might appreciate the Georgian architecture, but there's no museum or major attraction to justify a special trip on its own.

It sits handily between Calne and the broader Wiltshire walking routes, so it works well as a stopping point during a longer park holiday rather than a destination in itself. The camping and glamping options nearby are your best bet for making a proper stay of it.
