Dean wood

The woodland around Dean is proper Lancashire - dense, quiet, and the kind of place you can actually breathe. It's a working forest rather than a manicured country estate, which means you get real trees, mud underfoot, and the occasional reminder that you're somewhere actual rather than somewhere designed for Instagram. The main appeal is straightforward: walking. Miles of it, through beech and oak, with enough elevation to feel like you've earned a pint when you're done.

You'll want to allow two to three hours depending on which routes you take. There's no visitor centre or car park infrastructure to speak of - this isn't that kind of place - but that's also what makes it worth the trip if you're based near Clitheroe. Families with older kids who don't mind muddy boots will get on well here. Serious walkers will appreciate the solitude. If you've got small children expecting paths and playgrounds, you'll find the reality a bit underwhelming.

The forest works best as part of a longer Ribble Valley loop rather than a day trip in itself. Stay at one of the holiday parks - Pendle View or Wigwam Holidays Ribble Valley are close by - and combine it with walks around Clitheroe itself and the surrounding moorland. The best time is autumn when the light gets golden through the canopy and the crowds thin out. Spring is lovely too if you don't mind occasional wet patches. Summer can feel a bit close and buggy. Admission appears to be free, which feels about right for what is essentially a working wood you can access on foot.
