Cytir Mawr

You'll need to head to the hills above Beaumaris to find Cytir Mawr, a Bronze Age burial cairn that sits squat and weathered on the Anglesey moorland. It's the kind of place that doesn't announce itself with visitor centres or signage - you climb up, you find the stones, you stand there wondering about the people buried beneath them thousands of years ago.

The cairn itself is modest by archaeological standards, but that's rather the point. This is genuine prehistory, untouched by reconstruction or interpretation boards. A decent walk from the nearest car access, probably forty minutes or so, meaning you'll have the place to yourself. The views across the Menai Strait toward Snowdonia make the effort worthwhile on a clear day.

It's a walker's destination, pure and simple. History enthusiasts and archaeology buffs will appreciate the Bronze Age context, but casual visitors expecting something dramatic might find themselves underwhelmed. Children could manage it if they're used to moorland walks, though there's nothing to do once you're there except look and think.

Free to visit, naturally - there's nothing to charge for out here. Allow a couple of hours including the walk, more if you're photographing or lingering over the views. Staying nearby at Glamping Red Wharf Bay or Rhos Farm Caravan Park puts you within striking distance, though honestly, Anglesey's full of Bronze Age and Neolithic sites if you're keen on that sort of thing. Worth combining with other monuments in the area rather than making it a solo trip.
