Cytiau Gwyddelod

Stone foundations peek through the grass on a windswept hillside - all that remains of an ancient settlement that watched the Romans come and go. Cytiau Gwyddelod translates as 'Huts of the Irish', though these circular stone walls likely housed Romano-British families rather than visitors from across the Irish Sea. Walking among the low ruins, you can still make out individual roundhouses where people lived, worked and raised families some 1,500 years ago.

History buffs will love puzzling out the settlement's layout, while children might need some imagination to see past the tumbled stones. The site sits on open moorland near Dulas, with views across Anglesey's rolling countryside. It's completely free to visit and there's no set opening times - just park considerately and wander at will.

Expect to spend about 30 minutes here unless you're really into archaeology. The walking is easy enough for most ages, though proper shoes help on the uneven ground. Weather can change quickly on this exposed spot, so come prepared.

If you're staying at one of the holiday parks dotted around Dulas Bay - Tyn Rhos or Minffordd are both close by - this makes a decent morning detour before hitting Lligwy Beach. It's the sort of place that grows on you once you start imagining daily life in ancient Wales.
