Cwm Cremlyn

Dense woodland carpets this secluded valley on Anglesey's eastern edge, offering proper forest walks without the crowds you'll find elsewhere on the island. Cwm Cremlyn sits between Pentraeth and the coast, its ancient trees creating a cool canopy even on blazing summer days.

Walking here feels like stepping back centuries. Oak and ash dominate the higher slopes while willows crowd the boggy valley bottom where a small stream winds between moss-covered rocks. The paths aren't waymarked, so bring your sense of adventure and don't expect manicured trails.

Families with young children might find it challenging - the terrain can be rough underfoot and there are no facilities whatsoever. But older kids who love scrambling through proper woodland will have a field day. Dog walkers rate it highly too, though keep leads handy as sheep graze the surrounding farmland.

Allow two hours for a decent exploration, longer if you fancy following the stream to its source. Best visited after dry weather when the paths aren't ankle-deep in mud.
