Cultybraggan Camp

A sprawling World War II prisoner of war camp frozen in time just outside Crieff, Cultybraggan is one of Britain's best-preserved military heritage sites. Walking through the perimeter tells the real story of wartime Scotland - you'll find barrack blocks, guard towers, and the sparse administrative buildings where thousands of Italian and German prisoners were held during the conflict.

The site is genuinely eerie. Unlike sanitised museum displays, this feels like stepping into 1943. You can wander the grounds freely, peering into the remaining structures and imagining what daily life looked like here. There's no queue, no entrance fee, no gift shop trying to sell you overpriced merchandise - just the raw landscape and crumbling concrete.

History buffs will spend hours reading the interpretive boards and working out the camp's layout. Families with older children find it compelling too, though younger kids might get restless after thirty minutes unless they're keen on military history. It's not a playground.

Free to visit, no fixed hours - you simply rock up. Allow at least an hour to do it properly. The walk around the perimeter takes a good forty minutes if you're thorough. Go in winter or late autumn when the light's moodier and crowds are non-existent.

Nearby holiday parks at Comrie and Twenty Shilling Wood make decent bases for exploring this corner of Perthshire. Cultybraggan works brilliantly as a half-day addition to a broader regional trip rather than a standalone visit.
