Cruach Mheadhonach

The walk up Cruach Mheadhonach takes you straight into proper hill country above Lochgilphead. It's not a massive peak - around 500 metres - but that's actually what makes it work so well as a half-day objective from the caravan park. The views south towards the Kintyre Peninsula open up gradually as you climb, and on a clear day you get genuine panorama stuff across the water.

This isn't a manicured path kind of outing. You'll be picking your way through heather and bog, which means good boots and the knowledge that things get wet underfoot after rain. Most walkers allow two to three hours return from the car park, depending on fitness and how long you linger on top. The real appeal here is solitude - you won't be jostling for space with tourists.

Families with older kids (say, ten plus) and proper hikers will get the most from it. Younger children might find the terrain tedious, and the views, while genuine, won't be Instagram gold. That said, if you're stopping at Lochgilphead Caravan Park, this gives you a proper escape without hours of driving. The town itself is small - you'll do it for supplies and dinner - but the hills around here repay exploration.

Free to walk, obviously. Go in spring or early autumn for the best weather; summer brings midges in the evening. Winter can be boggy enough to make the walk genuinely unpleasant.
