Cross Field Knott

Cross Field Knott is a modest fell on the edge of the Pennines, accessible from Skipton and forming part of the sprawling Yorkshire Dales landscape. It's not a dramatic summit - the views are decent rather than breathtaking - but the walk itself has genuine appeal if you're based at one of the nearby glamping or caravan sites.

The ascent takes roughly 45 minutes to an hour depending on fitness and which route you pick. What makes it worth doing is the approach through farmland and proper moorland, plus the sense of solitude you get up there. On a clear day you'll see across the Dales, with decent views toward Pendle Hill. The top is bare and windswept, exactly what you want from a fell walk in this part of the world.

Families with older kids will manage it fine - the gradient is steady rather than punishing. Younger children might find it tedious, though. Walkers treating it as a warm-up before tackling something more ambitious in the Dales will find their legs appreciate the gentler pitch.

If you're staying at Malham Glamping Pods or Wood Nook, it's basically on your doorstep, making it an obvious choice for a half-day outing. Allow two to three hours if you're taking your time and stopping for views. There's no admission charge and no facilities at the summit, so bring water and something to eat. Early morning is best if you want solitude, though honestly there's rarely much of a queue.
