Càrn Breugach

The walk up Càrn Breugach isn't long, but it's steep enough that you'll feel you've earned the views across Argyll once you're standing on top. This little peak sits just outside Oban, making it accessible if you're after something quick without the slog of the bigger mountains nearby.

You're looking at roughly an hour up, forty minutes down if you're moving at a decent pace - not a full day commitment. The path is rough in places and can be boggy after rain, so proper boots are essential rather than optional. The real draw is the panorama from the summit. On a clear day you get the islands spread out before you, the Firth of Lorne, and the Oban hills rolling away in all directions. It's the kind of view that justifies the mud on your trousers.

Families with older kids will manage this fine. Younger ones might find the steep bits tedious, and the muddy sections lose their appeal quickly. It's more for walkers who want a proper hill experience without committing to a full Munro day. History buffs won't find much at the top itself - it's the landscape that speaks here, not archaeology.

Stay at Oban Holiday Park just down the road and you've got this sorted as a morning excursion before heading into town for lunch. Tanunda Pods and Maggie's Cabin offer quieter bases slightly further out if you want to use Càrn Breugach as part of a wider walking weekend. No facilities on the mountain itself, so bring water and a snack.
