Creag Tòrr Fionn

The walk up Creag Tòrr Fionn from Pitlochry is a proper Perthshire classic - nothing too technical, but you'll feel like you've earned the view when you reach the summit. The peak itself sits well above the town, offering those panoramic vistas across the Tay Valley that make you remember why you came north in the first place. On a clear day, the outlook stretches for miles. On a grey one, which you should half-expect in these parts, you get that moody Scottish thing.

It's a walker's hill rather than a casual stroll. Allow a couple of hours up and down from the start of the path. Wear proper boots - the terrain gets boggy in stretches, and the ground doesn't forgive sloppy footwork. Families with older kids (eight upwards) will manage fine; younger ones might find it frustrating. History enthusiasts won't find much to dwell on, but outdoor types will absolutely get something from the effort.

Base yourself at Faskally Woods Holiday Park just a mile away, or any of the caravan parks clustering around the Pitlochry area - River Tilt Park and Blair Castle Caravan Park are both solid options if Faskally's full. Pitlochry itself is worth an afternoon: the dam is free to walk across, and there's enough tea rooms and chip shops to keep anyone fed. The climb works brilliantly as a half-day outing before exploring the town proper. Go early to beat any midges, and bring a windproof - the weather changes fast up there.
