Creag Dhubh, dun site

You'll find the remains of an Iron Age fort on a rocky outcrop above Lochgilphead - nothing flashy, just low stone walls and the ghost of what was once a proper defensive position. The site itself is free to wander, which is just as well because there's no visitor centre or interpretation boards to speak of. What you get is archaeology in the raw: tumbled stones, views across the Argyll landscape, and the satisfaction of standing where people stood two thousand years ago.

The walk up isn't strenuous, but it's not a stroll either. Allow half an hour to reach the summit and have a proper look around. It's the kind of place that appeals to history types and anyone who enjoys piecing together the past from physical remains rather than fancy displays. Kids might enjoy the scramble up, though there's nothing to hold their attention once they're there - no playground, no cafe, no fake castle to climb.

If you're staying at The Pod Over By or Lochgilphead Caravan Park, this makes a solid morning excursion before heading elsewhere. The views alone justify the effort, and it's the sort of detour that actual travellers take rather than following the guidebook. Go when the midges aren't out if you can manage it. Wear decent boots - the ground gets muddy and loose underfoot.
