Creag Chuinnlean

The walk up Creag Chuinnlean from Pitlochry is straightforward enough - nothing that'll leave you gasping - but the views across the Tummel Valley make the climb worthwhile. You're looking at maybe an hour and a half to the summit if you keep a steady pace, and the path is well-trodden without being tedious.

It's a proper hill walk rather than a scramble, which means families with older kids will manage it fine. The scenery opens up as you gain height - nothing dramatic, but genuinely lovely Perthshire countryside falling away below you. On a clear day you can see quite far, though the peak itself isn't exactly dramatic when you reach it.

Parking is straightforward near Pitlochry, and there's no fee for the walk. Allow two to three hours if you're not rushing. The real appeal here is that it fits perfectly into a longer holiday based at one of the nearby parks - Faskally Woods is barely a mile away, which makes it ideal for a morning outing before heading elsewhere. River Tilt Park and Grandtully Station Campsite are only a short drive, so you could string together a few walks across the area without shifting your base.

Worth doing if you're staying locally and want something with a bit of purpose. Don't expect Cairngorm drama, but it's a solid couple of hours outdoors with decent rewards at the top.
