Creag Bhealaich

The walk up Creag Bhealaich starts from just outside Pitlochry and rewards you with views across Perthshire that stretch for miles on a clear day. It's not a massive undertaking - more of a proper hill than a mountain - which means you can bag it in a couple of hours without needing specialist kit or a dawn start.

The path itself is straightforward enough, though it does get steeper as you climb. You're looking at decent leg work, but nothing that would stop a reasonably fit walker. The summit isn't dramatic or rocky - just a cairn and a sense of having earned those views. On the way up you'll pass through mixed woodland and moorland, and if you time it right with the weather, the outlook across the River Tay and beyond is genuinely worth the effort.

This is very much a walker's peak rather than a family picnic spot. Young kids might struggle with the climb, though teenagers with some walking experience could manage it fine. History buffs won't find much up there, but landscape photographers will be kept busy.

If you're staying at one of the caravan parks near Pitlochry - Faskally Woods is practically on the doorstep - this makes a cracking afternoon outing. It's free to walk, obviously, and there's parking near the trailhead. Go early if the weather looks decent; cloud rolls in quickly in these hills and ruins the whole point of being up there.
