Creag an Eirionnach

The walk up Creag an Eirionnach from Pitlochry is one of those Scottish climbs that looks modest on the map but rewards you properly once you're up there. It's a relatively short peak - nothing that'll take all day - but the views south towards the Tummel Valley are genuinely excellent, especially on a clear morning when you can pick out Ben Vrackie and the surrounding ridges.

The route itself is straightforward, starting from the town and climbing steadily through woodland before breaking out onto open moorland. Most walkers allow two to three hours for a comfortable outing, though you could knock an hour off that if you're moving briskly. It's the kind of walk that suits anyone from confident families to serious hikers after a decent stretch of legs without the full commitment of a bigger mountain.

Being this close to Pitlochry means you can easily tie it in with a caravan park stay - Faskally Woods and River Tilt Park are barely twenty minutes away by car, and Blair Castle Caravan Park not much further. If the weather turns, Pitlochry itself has plenty to occupy you, but honestly, pick a decent day and get up early. The midges can be fierce in summer, so go when there's a bit of wind. Winter scrambles are sharp and icy here, so stick to spring through autumn unless you know what you're doing.
