Craigower

The walk up Craigower takes you straight out of Pitlochry and rewards you properly - we're talking 360-degree views over the Tay Valley that justify the climb. It's a steep one, mind you. The summit sits at 400 metres and you'll feel every bit of it on the legs, but the whole thing takes maybe 45 minutes up and the same down if you're moving at a reasonable pace.

What you get at the top is proper Perthshire - forested slopes dropping away toward Pitlochry below, the river snaking through the valley, and on a clear day the distant hills stacking up to the north. It's the sort of spot that makes you understand why people actually chose to live here centuries ago.

This suits walkers who want something short and punchy rather than an all-day expedition. Families with teenagers will manage it fine; younger kids might find the steepness a slog. The path is well-trodden and obvious - no navigation required. There's nothing at the top except the view and maybe a breeze, so don't expect facilities or shelter.

If you're staying at one of the holiday parks nearby - Faskally Woods is basically on your doorstep, less than a mile away - you can knock this out before breakfast or squeeze it in between other activities. It works well alongside the bigger Pitlochry attractions: Dam, Power Station visitor centre, that sort of thing. Not earth-shattering on its own, but for a morning's exercise with an actual reward, it's well worth the walk.
