Craig Fonvuick

The walk up Craig Fonvuick from Pitlochry isn't long, but it packs a proper punch. You're looking at roughly two hours there and back, climbing through mixed woodland before breaking out onto a peak that gives you the full sweep of the Tummel Valley. The views across to Ben Vrackie are the real draw here - on a clear day you can trace the landscape all the way toward the Southern Highlands.

It's best tackled by anyone with reasonable fitness and decent boots. Families with older kids will manage it fine, though younger ones might struggle with the steeper sections. The woodland path itself is well-trodden and fairly easy to follow, but the final push to the summit requires a bit of scrambling. Allow a full afternoon if you're taking your time and want to sit up top with a flask.

There's no charge, no visitor centre, no facilities - it's just a straightforward hill walk. Go early if you can, especially in summer, as the path gets busy with day-trippers from Pitlochry. Winter and autumn are quieter and often clearer, though you'll need proper kit.

If you're based at one of the caravan parks nearby - Faskally Woods or River Tilt are closest - this makes an excellent morning out alongside longer explorations of the area. It's not a destination in itself, but it's a solid half-day that proves you don't need a massive epic to get rewarding views. The locals know it well, which says something.
