Cracking Hill

At 103 metres above sea level, this is about as mountainous as Norfolk gets. Cracking Hill sits just inland from Sheringham, offering surprisingly good views across the North Norfolk coast for those prepared to make the climb through Sheringham Park's wooded slopes.

The walk up takes about 20 minutes from the park's main car park, winding through rhododendron groves and stands of oak and beech. It's proper steep in places - your calves will know about it - but the reward at the top is worth the effort. On clear days you can see right across to the Norfolk Broads, with Sheringham's Victorian pier stretching into the North Sea below.

Families with older children will manage fine, though toddlers might struggle with the gradient. Dog walkers love it here, particularly in autumn when the woodland colours are at their best. The hill forms part of the larger Sheringham Park estate, so there's plenty more to explore if you fancy extending the walk.

From holiday parks like Kelling Heath or Beeston Regis, it's an easy drive to Sheringham's outskirts where several footpaths lead up to the summit. Allow a couple of hours for the round trip if you want to take your time and actually enjoy those views rather than just tick off another Norfolk 'peak'.
