Cowstead Wood

Ancient woodland just outside Maidstone that feels properly separated from the town despite being barely a mile away. Cowstead Wood is the sort of place you stumble into expecting a quick stroll and end up losing two hours wandering between mature beech and oak. The canopy here is genuinely thick - even on bright days it's cool and dimly lit underfoot, with a good carpet of leaf mould that deadens your footsteps.

It's best suited to walkers who like a proper forest rather than manicured park paths. Families with younger children will manage fine on the main trails, though buggies will struggle with the muddier sections. History enthusiasts might find the woodland itself more rewarding than any specific structures, though there's something satisfying about walking through ancient forest that's been here since before Maidstone proper existed.

The wood works brilliantly as a half-day circuit if you're based at Bearsted Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite or the five-star Chegworth Mill Glamping - both are close enough for a morning walk without needing to plan a whole trip around it. Allow ninety minutes to two hours to do it properly without rushing. It's free to walk, with no formal opening hours or facilities that I'm aware of.

Timing-wise, autumn is genuinely special here - the light through the turning leaves is proper atmospheric. Spring's decent too when the woodland floor comes alive. Summer can feel a bit thick and buggy if you're unlucky. Worth the detour if you're in the area and want something genuine rather than managed.
