Cowden

The walk up Cowden rewards you with proper views across the Yorkshire Dales, though you'll need decent legs and an hour or so to get there from Skipton. It's a straightforward fell - nothing technical, just relentless uphill through moorland that gets progressively wilder the higher you climb. On a clear day the visibility is excellent, and you can pick out Pen-y-ghent and Whernside in the distance, which makes the effort feel worthwhile.

This is walker territory, plain and simple. If you're after a gentle stroll with nice views, look elsewhere - Cowden demands some fitness and proper footwear. But if you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks or glamping spots like Malham Glamping Pods just down the road, and you fancy a proper hill day without needing crampons or a rope, it's a solid choice. The surrounding area is peppered with walks and attractions - Malham village itself has the Cove and Janet's Foss waterfall if you want something less strenuous.

Timing matters here. The weather rolls in fast across these moors, so start early and check conditions before you head out. Spring and autumn tend to be best - summer can get busy on the main fell paths, and winter requires more caution. Bring a map and compass even if you think you know the route; visibility can turn quickly. The summit itself is modest - a cairn on open moorland - but the journey up is what you're really paying for. No facilities on the fell itself, so pack water and snacks.
