Cowan Fell

The walk up Cowan Fell from Moffat takes you across moorland that shifts from tame to properly wild the higher you climb. Go in the shoulder seasons - spring or autumn - when the midges aren't biting and the weather's more stable. It's completely free, obviously. The Moffat Camping and Caravanning Club Site sits just a few miles down the valley and makes a proper base for the area. Pair Cowan Fell with Moffat itself - a proper little town with decent cafes and pubs - and you've got a weekend sorted. The walk doesn't take all day, which means you can do it morning or afternoon and still have time to explore elsewhere in the region.
